Once considered a reliably Blue state in the Rust Belt, Wisconsin moved to the forefront of general election battlegrounds after Trump narrowly won it in 2016. Had the pandemic never happened and the economy been humming along, Wisconsin would've probably gone to Trump again – but now all anyone is talking about is the coronavirus and what it is doing to the economy. Adjusted for inflation, wages in Wisconsin have gone up just 73¢ in 40 years. That’s not a statistic you ever hear. The pandemic has made it crystal clear that there is one economy for the rich who are excited about the stock market, and another for working folk who are struggling to keep the roof over their head and put food on the table. That message got through to enough people, and what was once Trump’s biggest strength in Wisconsin became his biggest weakness and he lost to Joe Biden.
Trump's campaign paid $3 million to cover the cost of the recounts, but the recount only reaffirmed Joe Biden’s victory in Wisconsin by about 20,600 votes.
